Since she can remember owner Alicia Norman always dreamed of being a hairstylist. In her adolescence she emerged herself in YouTube videos about hair taking in all the knowledge from the skillful stylist she would watch and hope to one day be able to do the same. A Youtube video she would often go back to was a demonstration video for the marcel iron. Something about how the hair would shine and the way the iron transformed the hair to silk quickly depend her obsession for hair. When she was 9 her mother Lisa Norman made an appointment for her to get her hair done at a salon for the first time, not knowing that this would be the catalyst for a love for hair that couldn’t be reversed. Soon as I walked in the smell of hair product, the smoke from the irons, confident stylist, free to create whatever style they wanted (in my head lol) with every hair tool to their disposal, an image ingrained in my mind forever and it was a dream come true for 9 yr old me. Then the stylist brought out the tool that I had only been watching through a screen, the infamous “Marcel Iron” excitement instantly came over me like a kid at a playhouse. The stylist quickly became amused by my excitement and was beguiled that a 9 yr old was in awe about an iron but that was a moment that was monumental for me. From then on I began to style my friends’ hair at the age of 10, practicing and discovering new techniques within hair and starting to perfect my craft until I got my license at 18. I then went on to have been blessed with opportunity after opportunity from styling hair at fox 5 and Good morning America to Congressional Black Caucus, LAFW, down to my work being featured in BAZZAR magazine with designer Nancy Vu. I then met my muse and inspiration the amazing TV personality, Makeover guru and Model coach from Emmy ward winning show “America’s Next Top Model” the fabulous Paul Wharton. Paul recognized a spark in me and decided to take a chance on me becoming his hairstylist. This changed the trajectory of my brand forever. Paul being so rich in knowledge and wisdom quickly became a person I looked up to and became so grateful for and has blessed me in more ways than one. Being able to come along with him and be part of many amazing projects and events has been the joy of my life for 5 years now. Opportunities to style legends like Jennifer Holiday, and even Vivica Fox! the list goes on but I am proud and grateful to say that Paul is apart of my CoiffedByKen family and me apart of his. CoiffedByken has truly been a manifestation of the love God has placed in my heart for hair all these years and will continue to share.
